Hi my name is Ella West, and I will be writing this blog on behalf of Lucinda, whilst she's hard at work. I am aiming to do a post at least every Sunday, including information and photos on Lucinda's current work.
Well I think introductions are in order. Lucinda has been a ceramic artist for 12 years. She lives above her gallery; every artist's dream, in the grounds of the historic Claydon House. I haven't got enough time to tell you about the house, so just Google it.
Lucinda has run her gallery for nine successful years and has a son of 39. Lucinda is of the opinion that once one becomes a parent, you treat all other children like your own. So with that, her three other "honorary" kids, otherwise known as employees, are Lawrence, Eleanor and Ella , and I quote (I'm not bragging) from Lucinda's mouth, "...whose combined massive talents are contributing largely to the success of this gallery."
People who visit the gallery express their delight in the warm and friendly atmosphere, as well as asking which plant is in the same pot ...every...single...time.
So let's get started!
Lucinda is my boss, so I'm not taking this as a chance to suck up to her at all...cough..cough, but this week she has created some beautiful pieces. Her signature piece is the ever popular Fragments Collection, which you can see on her Flickr account http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucindabrown/She also makes Garden sculpture (Garden Angels) which are beautiful female faces with peaceful expressions emerging from interesting background designs, which are wall mounted. Here is an example:
Recently, she has decided to experiment with these faces by making them on a larger scale. Of course this takes a lot more time and effort but she thinks that the outcome is well worth it.
After hearing exclaims of "I'm loving this." and "She's gorgeous!", which are not foreign phrases in the gallery, from behind the curtain, she emerged from her workshop with this beauty:
A customer then suggested to her that she should call her Merlot, which Lucinda loved. So now she has decided to design three different big Garden Angels, each with different names, Merlot, Chianti and Shiraz, with the grapevine theme.
As you will learn as this blog grows, Lucinda has a very good, but awful, sense of humour towards everything. She enjoys the good joke or two a day that she usually receives in her emails. For example, she told me this today, "Last night I dreamt I was eating a marshmallow. When I woke up my pillow was gone." which had her in fits of laughter. Anyway back to my point, one of her designs, includes lots of shell textures. As she was showing me this piece she decided to name her Shelly. As usual, her airy burst of laughter followed, as if she had been planning the joke the whole morning before I had arrived. That's the one thing you will always find at the Lucinda Brown Gallery apart from ceramics, a roar of infectious laughter.
